How is wrestling political? (to me, at least).(Other than the fact that the current biggest wrestling promotion in the world (WWE) has its hands directly on the wheel of the White House during Trump's bigoted disgusting administration)...Wrestling is Art. Art is a form of Expression. Expression is Political.Wrestling is alot like theatre. There are lights, costumes, roles, cameras, a crowd. But even without all of that, the physical toll it takes to move your body (whether it be synchronized, planned, or not) and the mental energy it takes, makes it one of the most beautiful and outspoken forms of art and expression. You can tell a story without speaking. You can be unique. You can embody a single role, or 5. The idea of breaking a mold, whether it be societal or in kayfabe is political. There are no boxes in wrestling. Or at least there shouldn't be.Aside from that, the idea of having "babyfaces" and "heels." The idea of the public (fans) choosing who they want to side with. Choosing who to believe in. It's alot like real life. It is real life. The concept of getting fans to believe in you and in your story. Giving people something to hope for. Or if you're a heel, tearing it all away. Again, alot like real life.Whenever you're breaking down barriers by being queer or expressive, or you're ripping away the hope of the people you're meant to instill hope in, I see it alot like how real life works, especially in politics. There are leaders, factions, hurt, pain, joy, expression, theatre. And maybe that looks worse on American politics than it does wrestling as a medium. (I think you could make that argument). That's only just part of what makes wrestling mirror politics to me, especially given the fact that Everything Is Political.(And none of this is even accounting for gimmicks, storylines, and promos throughout wrestling's history. Some good, some very bad, all very political with messages. Alot of them mirroring real life events. Take H-lk H-gan's feud with the Iron Sheik). The act of inspiring people, children and adults alike, to succeed no matter whatever economic situation they may reside in, or whatever career field they choose, is real life. Kayfabe may be kayfabe, but wrestling doesn't just stay in it.The act of making people feel something. And then we have wrestlers like Sami Zayn, Mustafa Ali, and Mansoor, just to name a couple, who actively use their platforms to speak against and to support victims of the ONGOING!!! genocide in Palestine. In Mustafa's case Sudan as well. And in Sami's case, also Syria. And Mansoor's wrestling persona is very queer, very out of the mold. Breaking a barrier.Even though their careers have been threatened and they've been told it's not worth risking their employment for. They've still done it.
Empathy rules over bigotry. (At least, it should). Even if your career is being threatened for standing on the right side of history. In a world where being bland, abiding by made up rules and standards (how to speak, how to look, how to dress, how to act, how to identify, how to love) are being still currently ruled over by the government and upheld by society, wrestling gives highlight to how different personalities can still be loved and cherished all the same. All in all, Wrestling is Art, and Art is Political. Any medium that can inspire action or change is political. And although the right-wing bigots and Nazis have had monopoly over this medium and sport for a very long time, they will never own it. They can never take away what makes it great. They'll never take away the people that inspire good or change the world. Because Art is Timeless. Art inspires. Wrestling is Art.And Art is Political.
